The line may also relieve congestion in other MRT lines in those areas, such as the North South Line, and cutting travel times to up to 40 minutes travelling to the CBD. If the line is approved, it could potentially serve areas such as Sembawang, Simpang, Seletar, Serangoon North, Whampoa and the future Greater Southern Waterfront, bringing greater convenience to more than 400,000 households. It is planned to run along the northeastern corridor of Singapore, bringing the transport network closer to developing neighbourhoods and current ones which do not have direct access to it.
The Seletar Line was first proposed in the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 by the Land Transport Authority.
